The Island Green Of Cybersecurity

The Players Championship is often called the fifth major in professional golf, and TPC Sawgrass, the Florida course where the tournament is played, is widely known for its signature 17th hole. The green is an island, a small patch of turf across about 150 yards of water from the tee box. Even when you consider that most pros rarely miss the typical green from that distance, close to three dozen balls end up in the water surrounding the 17th green during the tournament. The presence of the threat of water has palpable effects on even the professional’s mindset.

The same is true for the cybersecurity professionals who face an almost constant and certain threat from every tee box. You have a staff of key people to help you read the tough putts across an ever-changing cyber landscape, and you have a bag of tricks designed for very specific purposes, and still you pause in the parking lot at the end of the day, hands on the wheel, replaying the tape to make sure you made the right call. Still, you lay awake some nights trying to stay at least one step ahead of the threat.
