Is That Toaster Listening To Us?

In the interest of your organization’s OPSEC, step away from the microwave before you answer this question. There is no telling who might be listening right now. And if you’ve ever had Russian dressing on your salad, be sure you state that explicitly. Denial is not just a river in Egypt. Here’s the question: How confident are you that your cybersecurity practices are up to speed?

If you look around, almost everybody’s getting hacked. Breaches of networks have become so commonplace that it would be easy to speculate that, statistically, it’s only a matter of time. And the depth of that penetration continues to confound. Taking just what the Russians are assumed to be involved with, our politics, our democratic process, and even the counter-top appliances in some of the world’s most secure buildings are threatened. By comparison, smaller organizations MUST be under siege already. They just don’t know it yet.

Nothing to Fear but Fear Itself, and Apathy

But you’re an IT professional, perhaps, or a team leader with enough knowledge about cybersecurity to be dangerous. Trouble is, that previous level of dangerous is now enormously dangerous, and it’s only getting worse.

How am I doing so far? Still confident in your team’s practices?

The goal is not to create a sense of fear. The goal is to create a sense of urgency. Because, statistically, it is just a matter of time. When that time comes, though, the more informed you are before a breach, the more likely you are to prepare, prevent, and prevail.
