Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, Russian hacking resurfaces in waters beyond the political. Sure, it was devastating when we realized that Russia had wormed its way into our electoral and democratic process, but that was apparently just the beginning of the story.
As reported in Bloomberg and elsewhere, digital Russian fingerprints are now being found on hacking efforts that have breached our power grids and vital infrastructure, including the Wolf Creek Nuclear Facility in Kansas. No, Toto, we’re not just in Kansas anymore, and the man behind the curtain making every effort to pull the levers and switches has experience with this kind of attack. Russia was able, in recent years, to affect real change in the Ukrainian electrical infrastructure. This ain’t their first rodeo.
Unplugged Is Unhinged
Take a look around you. To what extent are you dependent on electrical power? How long would you make it if hackers pulled the plug? I see what you’re doing now. Looking around for ammo, bourbon, and gold bouillon. Who knows what will hold value in the dark days of power apocalypse.
Keep Calm And Cyber On
We have to trust that those in power are looking out for our power. Well, trust and verify. At the local level, though, we have to take measures to ensure that organizations prepare for the troubles ahead, even if they never show up on our doorsteps.
ICS can help with that. Call today, and let’s put the power back in your hands, no matter who knocks at the door.
