Bugcrowd, a rewards platform for freelance white hat hackers that’s been around for seven years or so, recently reported a record week, with bounty payouts for the week totaling more than $500,000. That’s a lot of bucks for a lot of bugs, certainly, but less certain is whether that’s good news all around. Sure, vulnerabilities were discovered, prompting the payouts, so the digital world is potentially safer than it was the week before. The flip side, though, is that weaknesses are either increasing in number or are becoming easier to find, either of which is bad news.

In the end, though, most organizations need the fresh eyes of the curious and clever to tend their specific garden, to examine all things outward facing and find the vulnerabilities.
