With all the bad news out there about breaches and ransomware and what seems like the endless rise of the bad guys, it can be easy to overlook the good news from the good guys, even if you can’t quite decide if it’s good news or not.

Bugcrowd, a rewards platform for freelance white hat hackers that’s been around for seven years or so, recently reported a record week, with bounty payouts for the week totaling more than $500,000. That’s a lot of bucks for a lot of bugs, certainly, but less certain is whether that’s good news all around. Sure, vulnerabilities were discovered, prompting the payouts, so the digital world is potentially safer than it was the week before. The flip side, though, is that weaknesses are either increasing in number or are becoming easier to find, either of which is bad news.

The complexities of the cybersecurity landscape warrant a diverse set of skills working in many different ways to combat a growing threat, and hacker platforms like Bugcrowd certainly reward the curious and clever for staying on the high road.
