Cyber Crime, Prison Time

The media is full of breach stories. Names you know and trust get hacked and held for ransom, their users data cast to the wind or the open marketplace. Then there are the names of the suspected actors, sometimes creative in a dark, nerdy sense, other times nonsensical in their arrangement of characters. There are the stories of suspicions and investigations, legislation and abdication, but rare is the story of closure, the part where the bad guys go to jail and the good guys ride off into the sunset.

A recent presser from the Department of Justice (what, you don’t scour the DOJ website for salacious tales of crime and punishment?) tells the story of Sergiy Usatyuk, 21, to 13 months in prison and 3 years supervised release for his role in illegal booter schemes that perpetrated DDoS attacks from 2015 through 2017. Though “booters” and “stressors” are relatively low-hanging fruit, the attacks they promulgate through their subscribers can have far-reaching effects and unintended consequences.
