Tisk Tisk, TikTok

A show of hands of those whose kids or grandkids have an almost debilitating fondness for TikTok, the clever little app that records videos of people doing crazy things to get recorded and published on TikTok. That, after all, seems to be the entire purpose of most social media, but that’s a lecture for another day. TikTok is especially popular with the teen and tween set, despite the rule (and related court order) that personal information for those under 13 should be forever removed from the platform. A new court case described here suggests that TikTok is not proceeding with the discriminating eye that the courts required. Imagine that.

Chances are pretty good that no children under 13 are reading this, though that would represent a significant broadening of our captured demographic. The lesson for the adult set, then, is twofold. First, make sure you keep an eye on your kid’s TikTok, both production and consumption. Second, never take for granted that the systems you have in place are protecting you and yours. Even with a court order, there is some doubt whether the grown-ups are behaving like, well, grown-ups.

Your management routine includes lots of meetings to check in with senior staff, and you’ve met most of the team that handles your IT infrastructure, so there’s probably nothing to worry about. At least until there is, and that’s probably just a matter of time.

Call ICS today, and let’s get a fresh set of eyes on your digital world before it’s too late. Tick Tock.
